Swedish massage is used in English and Dutch speaking countries as well as Hungary. The rest of the world, including Sweden, refer to it as Classic massage.  Canada tends to use the term Relaxation massage.

The 5 techniques

  • Effleurage: Long and gliding strokes, intended to introduce massage oil to the skin.

  • Petrissage: Kneading, rolling, wringing and lifting of the skin and muscles. Helps enhance blood circulation and boost the healing process by unknotting muscle tightness.

  • Friction: Firm and circular rubbing motions and strokes. Helps warm up the muscles.

  • Tapotement: Rhythmic tapping, cupping or percussive movements. Helps stimulate muscles and enhance blood flow.

  • Vibration: Shaking, rocking or trembling movements on particular muscles. It can eventually decrease muscle tension and improve the body’s overall relaxation.
